How To Prepare Your Horse For Clipping

September 21, 2024

Outline

This one day workshop will teach you the skills to gain your horses trust and confidence. Sue will show you the step by step method of de-sensitising your horse to the 4 elements of sound, cable, touch and vibration. We isolate these 4 elements as we want our horse to be 100 percent comfortable within each part before combining them.  By isolating them we can also find out which element concerns our horse the most.

For many horses this training unfortunately did not take place and instead methods of restraint like twitching, cross-tying and hobbling were used so they are scared and quite frankly many are traumatised, leaving their owners struggling with how to help them and often ending up having to pay the vet to come out and sedate.

In Sue’s experience, a high percentage of horses fight the sedation after the 3rd season so potentially after about 6/8  sedations and then can and do become dangerous to themselves and their owner and person who is attempting to clip.

Sue has had a lot of success in helping horses re-gain trust and confidence and using a few of the horse’s resident at Jewels Stables she will show you how.

There is much to learn and you’ll need to bring your notepad and also use your phone for your own voice notes.

Contents

*   Our horse needs to know that he is being listened to and we need to understand his subtle body language before it gets anywhere near close to escalating so Sue is going to teach you how.

*   Horses miss nothing so remember that our intention is easy for them to read as is the smell of our anxiety so Sue will teach you how to be relaxed in your thoughts, your emotions and your body and help you become aware of how important your positioning is.

*   Learning thresholds and how to correctly approach

*   Learning where to start, when to pause as well as when to retreat and most importantly how to best reward.

*   Knowing if your own horse leans more towards introversion or extroversion and knowing how best to help their personality.

*   Learning how to properly introduce each element of sound, cable, touch as well as vibration.

All participants will be invited to email your situation and Sue will make sure that it is answered in the workshop

Everyone will have the opportunity to see the 2 or possibly 3 demonstrations that will take place.
